Common orthodontic issues

Crowding
Crowding is caused by teeth that overlap or are pushed tightly together because there isn’t enough room in the jaw. This can easily be treated with expanders, brace treatment and, less commonly, extraction.
Spacing
Spacing is the opposite of crowding. It’s when there are gaps between your teeth because of extra space or missing permanent teeth. This is a common issue that can be treated with braces or aligners.
Overbites
When the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth vertically more than normal, this is called an overbite. Overbites can put your front teeth at risk of injury, so it is important to correct this issue with orthodontic treatment.
Underbites
When your lower teeth sit in front of your upper teeth, this is called an underbite. This can lead to uneven tooth wear, difficulty chewing and TMJ issues. This issue is much easier to treat with early intervention orthodontics.
Crossbites
When one or more of your teeth cross over each other, this is called a crossbite. This misalignment can affect facial symmetry and cause uneven tooth wear.
Deep Bites
Deep bite is the term for a dramatic overbite. In severe cases, the lower teeth may bite into the roof of the mouth. This is one of the most damaging orthodontic issues and should be treated as early as possible.
Open Bites
An open bite occurs when the upper and lower teeth don’t meet when the mouth is closed. This gap most often appears at the front but can also affect the back teeth. Open bites may lead to uneven tooth wear, jaw joint discomfort and difficulties with speaking and chewing.

During this initial visit, our Treatment Coordinator will walk you through the treatment journey, discuss the options available, and help you decide whether a full clinical assessment with Dr Hirani is the right next step for you.
Their attention to detail was remarkable. They took the time to map out the best approach, always focusing on the final result rather than shortcuts. The transformation is unbelievable; my smile looks natural, balanced, and completely different in the best way. Smilelux delivered exceptional care from start to finish.
During my first ever appointment it was explained to me very clearly that, while technically I could pursue orthodontics without removing the impacted teeth, this would limit the tooth movement and require teeth being pulled forwards. I was told that if I went down this route then I would end up with an extreme and somewhat cartoon like overbite due to the sheer amount the teeth would need to be pulled forward to straighten the teeth out. The first consultation ended with the conclusion that I needed surgery to remove all my impacted teeth (or I could walk away and never have braces), and Dr Hirani was able to refer me to a specialist surgeon that he knew and trusted. Thankfully the surgeon was able to operate and remove pretty much everything required; I then began Invisalign in March 2022.
After 4 rounds of Invisalign (totalling 124 aligners worn) and over 4 years of treatment, I have now come to the end of my journey. Dr Hirani has been incredible every step of the way. He knew exactly when the aligners weren’t doing enough and when to add additional methods such as brackets with bands to help pull down teeth. I wanted to ensure that I understood exactly why things were being done, and Dr Hirani never failed to explain everything to me along the way so that I understood it all.
For years I used to hate smiling and was very self-conscious about my teeth, and now I see my smile and it was all worth it. Not only do my teeth look so much better but they are easier to clean and eating is easier too. They’re not perfect, but Dr Hirani was very clear from day 1 that with my difficult case they never could be perfect however they could be massively improved; and he absolutely did that.
After being turned away for years and being told that braces weren’t possible for me, finding SmileLux changed everything. Dr Hirani’s expert knowledge is why I can now smile and not be ashamed of my teeth.
I've finally reached the end of my orthodontic treatment. It's been four years, and it has been so worth it. Before having braces, I wasn't happy with my smile because of crowding and crooked teeth. I had the opportunity to have braces when I was younger, but I was about to start university and didn't want to begin treatment at that time.
At the age of 37, I plucked up the courage to go ahead with it, and I'm so glad I did. My sister-in-law had her treatment at SmileLux, and I'd heard great things about the practice, so I booked a consultation. Dr Hirani and his team were incredibly welcoming and took the time to explain everything thoroughly.
I decided to have ceramic braces and a Beneslider fitted to create space and allow my teeth to be moved into the correct position. Throughout my treatment, Dr Hirani, Saijal and Lateefah always made me feel comfortable, keeping me informed about both the process and the reasons behind each stage.
Dr Hirani is exceptional at what he does and genuinely strives for perfection. The results have exceeded my expectations, and I couldn't be happier with my new smile. I would highly recommend SmileLux to anyone considering orthodontic treatment.
