Retention the most important treatment phase

No orthodontic treatment is complete without a retainer. Retention is essential if you want to keep the smile results you worked so hard for. If you don’t wear your retainer as instructed, your teeth can begin to shift back to their pre-treatment positions.

Types of retainers

One set of retainers is included in your comprehensive treatment fee at SmileLux. Depending on the type of orthodontic treatment you had, Dr Hirani will provide you with a fixed or removable retainer - or a combination of the two!

Retainers

Fixed retainers

A fixed retainer is a stainless steel wire bonded to the inside of the lower front teeth. When wearing a fixed retainer, oral hygiene is especially important to avoid gum issues. Dr Hirani will custom make your fixed retainer to ensure a perfect, comfortable fit for you.

Retainers

Removable retainers

We offer several removable retainers at SmileLux including the Essix Retainer, Hawley Retainer and Begg Retainer.

Essix Retainers look a bit like Invisalign® clear aligners. Begg and Hawley Retainers are plastic plates with wires that wrap around the front of your smile to hold your teeth in position. The type of retainer we recommend will depend on your treatment type.

Retainers

Caring for your retainer

Retainers are delicate, and costly to replace. To keep your retainer safe, it’s important to:

  • Keep your retainer in its case whenever it’s not in use.
  • Avoid high heat - don’t put your retainer in the dishwasher, and use lukewarm water to clean it.
  • Gently clean your retainer with toothpaste and your fingers - toothbrush bristles can scratch your retainer.
  • Contact us on 01908 398068 immediately if your retainer is lost or broken so we can issue you a replacement.
